Unto This Last

During unu-life’s infancy, I have been working for a small furniture company called Unto This Last. Although only working part time – usually just one day a week – it has been great to get involved with such a revolutionary business idea. In their own words…

Unto This Last is the beginning of an experiment: Craftsmanship for the 21st Century

An old Victorian Pub is being converted into a new breed of gallery-workshop where you can buy furniture and accessories made on site. The objective is to recreate the atmosphere and the convenience of a local craftsman's shop.

By using the latest in 3D software, and a computer-controlled machine (set up at the back of the shop), each item of furniture can be made on demand, with variations on size and finish, individual to each client’s needs. There is no storage or transportation costs ensuring minimal energy waste.

The experiment is proving that thanks to new technology, mass-production is no longer the only way to make furniture at a reasonable price.

It is an inspiring place to work. With the availability of on-site and rapid production and hands-on material experimentation, it allows the design team to develop new products very quickly. The power of parametric modelling has been an insight for me; there are endless applications and it holds amazing potential.

The furniture has a very unique aesthetic and if you’re in the neighbourhood it’s an interesting place to visit: if you come during the week you’ll see the CNC router in action.
