unu-table (slats33)

A coffee table made entirely from waste birch-plywood. (Using only small strips of wood enables this design to be transferred to any type of timber at minimal expense because off-cuts and scraps can be used)

It uses no glue or additional fixtures: wedge-shaped legs clamp the laminated table surface together. This not only opens up the possibility for self-assembly but also overcomes the problems of wood shrinkage - caused by environment changes - frequently encountered in furniture. The table can be 'tightened up' at any stage to keep it rigid and stable.

The mechanical nature and purposeful simplicity of this table is a reaction against the hidden or unknown make-up of modern furniture. Truth to materials and sincerity in construction: though it uses modern geometric aesthetics the ideas are reminiscent of the Arts and Crafts era. The table shows the advantages of simple technologies and serviceability.

In uniform plywood, the table takes on additional features: The apparently irregular size of the surface slats forms a 'key' shape and allows two identical tables to be nestled together seamlessly.

Size variations available, prices start from £250 (price also dependent on choice of timber and availability). Please contact slatts33@unu-life.com
