unu-footwear
These shoes are made from a single sheet of recycled leather and use neither glue nor stitching.
They come flat-packed for self-assembly, ready to be folded together by hand. The shoes and all the packaging are both recycled and recyclable. Either as summer ‘scuff-arounds’ or household slippers, indoors or out, they’re comfortable and surprisingly durable.
The simple act of assembling your own shoes somehow liberates you from the constructs of our modern world where we are totally reliant on others to feed, clothe and protect us. unu hopes that consumers will share our passions for the physical world and take delight and satisfaction in creating something for themselves.
The design for these environmentally friendly shoes stems from deconstructing the physical concept of footwear into its component parts, taking one of those elements – pattern making – and rebuilding it in its purest form. (The basis for the design was a paper/cardboard shoe, origionally conceived in collaboration with Fauzi Fahm.) The refined result is a simple, understandable product that engages consumers in the act of assembly and enhances their sense of ownership. It is also intended to highlight the complexity of our built environment, and to extend consumers’ appreciation of the physical complexity in the products that surround us.
Take 2 minutes out of your busy schedule, have a cup of tea, and make your own shoes.
